In the plumbing world, are there times when teflon paste is prefered over teflon tape or vice-versa?

Teflon tape and pipe dope do the same thing. The tape is less messy to work with, but I believe most professionals prefer the dope. There are probably some plastic fittings that may react to the contents of some pipe dope so tape would be a better choice.
This is probably overdoing it, but I first put the teflon tape on and then put some pipe dope on top of the tape. Has worked well for me. Make sure the pipe dope is ok to use on whatever you are trying to seal. Good Luck!
